The pruned nodes (in red) represent entire regions of space that the algorithm never examines. The points inside those regions are never checked. Compare the "Nodes Visited" count to the total number of points. The quadtree is doing far less work than a brute-force scan.
Parting notesThe landscape is moving in a clear direction. There is a lot of exciting new tech out there, with people constantly pushing the limits of cold starts toward faster, securely isolated workloads using Python decorators and other novel approaches to make microvms feel like containers. The 386 microcode sequencer has a one-cycle pipeline delay: when a jump or RNI (run next instruction) is decoded, the micro-instruction immediately after it has already been fetched and will execute before the jump takes effect. This "delay slot" is a basic property of the sequencer, and the microcode is written to fill it with useful work rather than waste a cycle on a bubble.
